Dallas Cowboys lose starting DB for season

According to Calvin Watkins, the Dallas Morning News , Dallas Cowboys’ defensive back Jourdan Lewis had surgery for a Lisfranc Injury on Sunday night. On Sunday , Lewis sustained a injury during Cowboys’ win over Detroit Lions. This resulted in Lewis being taken off the field. According to Watkins, the surgery will end Lewis’ 2022 season.

Lewis was hurt when he made an important play for his team. The Cowboys led 10-6 in the fourth quarter. The Lions were close to midfield after a 3 rd attempt and a 12 attempt. Jared Goff attempted to throw for Tom Kennedy, but Lewis intercepted him. Lewis sustained his injury on that play.

Lewis was drafted third from Michigan in 2017 NFL Draft. He has been with Dallas his entire NFL career. Lewis has 26 total tackles through the first five games in the 2022 season. 17 of those were solo. Lewis’ season-ending interception was his only interception.

In March 2021, Lewis was awarded a three-year extension by the Cowboys. It is a maximum of $16.5million. Lewis recorded 61 tackles, 1.5 sacks and three interceptions in his first year of the new contract. According to Cowboys writer David Helman who shared more about the season ahead, Lewis proved his worth.

“It’s fair to say this entire Cowboy cornerback crew had a career outing in Dan Quinn’s first season as defensive coordinator,” Helman wrote. “Like Anthony Brown, Jourdan Lewis didn’t reach the dizzying highs of Trevon Diggs, but there’s no debating that the 2021 season was his best since getting drafted 92nd overall back in 2017. Lewis played 16 games and made 13 starts as the Cowboys’ nickel back, setting career highs for interceptions (3) and pass breakups (11). ProFootballFocus graded Lewis at a decent 62.1 in coverage, with 54 receptions on 81 targets on the year.”

The Cowboys will need to look for other options in order to replace Lewis and maintain their elite defense. Dallas is currently the NFL’s No. 6 defense and allows only 305.3 yards per match.

This Sunday, the Cowboys will host the Chicago Bears at their home. Kick will be shown on FOX at 12 p.m. CT.
