Proposed Trade With Rival Sends Cowboys a New Dynamic Quarterback

The solution to the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback woes may lie with their NFC East rivals, Philadelphia. We argued for a deal with the Eagles to acquire veteran quarterback, particularly considering Dak Prescott’s injury history.

According ESPN’s Todd Archer Prescott will miss six to eight weeks while he recovers after thumb surgery. Are the Eagles willing to assist a rival at the most crucial position in sports?

Minshew’s purchase price may have increased, but the Eagles might be open to making a trade due to their faith in Jalenhurts. Jim Nagy, a former NFL scout and Senior Bowl director suggested that the Cowboys reach out to Eagles to inquire about Minshew’s availability. Nagy said that the Cowboys could lose a Day 2 pick if they trade for Minshew.

“It’ll never happen because of NFC East rivalry but Gardner Minshew starting for Cowboys the next two months would be fun,” Nagy said in a series of September 12 tweets. “Probably isn’t greater trade leverage scenario than Cowboys needing half-season starting QB & dealing w/ GM who’s also owner. Howie Roseman only gave up 6th for Gardner Minshew. If Howie could get 2nd/3rd for Minshew it would be impressive flip. Jalen Hurts is incredibly durable.”

The answer to the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback woes may lie with their NFC East rivals, Philadelphia. We argued for a deal with the Eagles to acquire veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew, particularly considering Dak Prescott’s injury history.

The two rivals have had to do business before. Philadelphia and Dallas had previously reached an 2021 draft day trade with Dallas trading at No. 10 to No. 12 where Micah Parsons was eventually selected. Philadelphia got DeVonta Smith. In the deal, DeVonta Smith was also traded to Philadelphia.

Minshew would require the Cowboys to pay a tax to the Eagles in order to make a deal.

Prescott is expected to be absent for almost half the season. All indications suggest that the Cowboys will rely on Cooper Rush. Dallas could be out of playoff contention by the time Prescott returns.

Minshew will be finishing the fourth year of a $2.7million contract, with a $2.5million salary in 2022. The Eagles’ quarterback has made 22 NFL starts.

Minshew’s greatest season was in his rookie year of 2019, when he threw to 3,271 yards and 21 touchdowns, while also completing 60.6% in his 14 Jaguars appearances. Minshew is also an offensive threat, adding 344 yards rushing in the same season. Minshew asked Nick Sirianni, Eagles head coach, to be the team’s quarterback in 2021.

“I will say something about Gardner. He is a competitor. He’s locked into whether he is the backup or whether he plays, right?” Sirianni stated during a January 6th press conference. He’s played in both situations this year, with the Jets, and didn’t know if he was still playing until very late in that week. He’s competitive and will prepare like mad no matter what situation.

“Every backup that we have on this team, if they didn’t want to be the starter, I’d have an issue with them being the backup. And so, Gardner has played a lot of football in this league. I got a lot of confidence in him that he’s our backup. … We always talk about wanting your backup quarterback to be able to come in and function and give you a chance to win. And we saw that he gave us [that], he was awesome in the game that he played against the Jets and so I would be disappointed if Gardner didn’t want to be the starter but obviously Jalen’s our starter.”
