Ex-Cowboys DL Signing With Ravens in Free Agency

An NFL veteran, a former Dallas Cowboys player is now ready to make a comeback with his first NFL team, The Baltimore Ravens.

From 2015 to 2018, defensive end Brent Urban was with the Ravens for four seasons. Now, it appears Urban is returning to the NFL. Urban was with Dallas for the 2021 season, but didn’t make much of an impact on a one year deal.

It was interesting to note that Urban’s wife Kate was the one who “broke” the news via Twitter on May 20th, with a subtle mention of ESPN reporter Adam Schefter.

Urban turned 31 years old this May, and is now entering his eighth NFL season. Urban’s only year with was not a great one. However, he is a veteran who still started four games last season.

The Canadian defensive lineman hails from Mississauga in Ontario. He attended Virginia and played three seasons. He only had 3.0 sacks during his college career, but his senior season’s 11 tackles for loss proved that he was able to stop the run at a high standard.

Urban, who is 6’7 and 295 lbs, makes a great choice. Urban’s stature and his senior season in Charlottesville attracted NFL teams. The Ravens chose him in the fourth round in 2015 NFL draft.

Urban is a run-focused defensive lineman and has not been able to accumulate tackles or sacks. Urban excels in taking up space and pushing the offensive linemen off the line. Urban has accumulated 6.0 sacks and 10 tackles for loss over his seven-year career. He also defends 9 passes according to Pro Football Reference.

Urban spent four years in Baltimore before joining the Chicago Bears, and then the Tennessee Titans for 2019. He will spend all of 2020 in Chicago. Urban then moved to Dallas in 2021. He started four games but only made 3 tackles and defended 1 pass.

Urban’s short time in Dallas was due to a triceps injury. put him on injured reserve late October. Urban wasn’t an impact player before, but it is always disappointing when a season is cut short.

used Urban as a defensive tackle. Urban was originally a DE in his first season with Baltimore. He could then switch back. However, if you look forward to the Cowboys’ defensive lines, Urban is the main focus.

Urban was primarily a rotating player in 2021 with Carlos Watkins, Osa Odighizuwa and Osa Odighizuwa. Urban will be on the outsides and these two will play a more prominent role, except for the rise of one of the young defenders.

John Ridgeway is a defensive lineman by the Cowboys that was drafted in fifth round of 2022 NFL draft. Ridgeway, who is 6’6 and 320 lbs, fits in the Urban mold.

He’s also coming from Arkansas, where Jerry Jones, Dallas’ owner, is a student.
