49ers Reportedly Signing Veteran Quarterback

The San Francisco 49ers need more quarterback depth and they have filled that need on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Mike Garafolo, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, San Francisco will add former Falcons and Packers quarterback Kurt Benkert as a member of its practice squad.

Benkert will be the third quarterback for the 49ers, following rookie Brock Purdy and Jimmy Garoppolo.

Following the season-ending injury to Trey Lance, Garoppolo was promoted to the starting position.

In 2018, Benkert, a Virginia native, signed as an undrafted-free agent with the Atlanta Falcons. Over the next three seasons, he alternated between the practice squad and the active roster but never played in a regular-season game.

Benkert transferred to Green Bay in 2021. He started on the practice squad, and was promoted when Jordan Love was added to the COVID-19 roster.

Last December 12, he saw his first action against Chicago Bears, kneeling twice in the final seconds to win.
